Sootheox
Fermented Sea Salt
As
of August 13, 2003, the Sootheox (and Quenchox)
products are no longer offered for sale, but this information is made
available
for educational purposes, as many folks have expressed interest in
making
such brews, elixirs and products on their own, and several existing
vendors
of nutritional products have expressed an interest in starting to brew
and market their own line of such products.
Introduction
to Sootheox Fermented Sea Salt,
an EM-treated Sea Salt
Introduction
EM-treated sea salt, was introduced by Dr. Higa via EMRO in Japan in
1999 under the name EM Rejuvenating Salt
(aka EM Salt),
and has been marketed in the USA since early 2003. Dr. Higa has written
that this salt has some very amazing and powerful properties which go
well
beyond the antioxidant content on the “chemical” or
physical level. He
claims that this salt has powerful life-giving regenerative powers, and
that it differs markedly from normal sea salt in that it is no longer
present
in the ionic form, but in an altered, non-ionic form which he and his
scientists
assert to be highly beneficial. He claims that while normal
salt,
whether sea salt or common table salt, is harmful to the body for
several
reasons and will damage tissues, EM-treated sea salt is antioxidative
and
regenerative in it’s physical properties and on an
“energetic” level, and
that it acts as a powerful healing catalyst in the body and in foods to
which it has been added. Dr. Higa and the EMRO scientists
claim that
the beneficial properties persist even when the salt is mixed with
foodstuffs
and cooked, and even when cooked or heated at very high
temperatures.
The EM Rejuvenating Salt has apparently been very
well received
in the health supplement marketplace in Japan and the USA, despite
it’s
hefty North American price tag of $21.99 for a 3.5 ounce packet of the
salt.
Why the hefty price tag for EM
Rejuvenating Salt? After
all, $22 for less than four ounces is a lot of bucks for an unrefined
sea
salt. Well, although not well-publicized on the
English-language
websites and flyers about EM Rejuvenating Salt, it
is asserted by
EMCO that this salt is harvested only at dawn under a full moon, to
allow
it to have special "energetic"' properties. This claim is very much
reminiscent
of the claims made by the adherents of Anthroposophy and Biodynamics, a
philosophical/farming/lifestyle tradition founded in Germany by Rudolf
Steiner, and procedures used for many of their medicinals and
agricultural
potions.
Further, one caller who has been to Japan has told
me that some Japanese-language
flyers also claim that the salt is harvested only by 14 year old
virgins
(female, of course) at dawn at the appropriate time of the month (as
already
noted above). This claim is extremely reminiscent of the
procedures
used by many old schools of alchemy, especially those which came from
Europe
and China, where the morning dew for certain potions could be collected
only by 14 year-old (or preteen) virgin maidens at the break of dawn on
a south-facing slope at the Equinox. This claim is often eerily
reminiscent
of the hyped claims often made in Japan for Japanese Kobe beef, where
it
is often asserted that the cows are raised in luxury stalls in palatial
barns in America, and that each cow is hand-fed and hand-massaged daily
only by preteen virginal maidens with "pure" minds and hearts.
Dr. Higa on De-ionization and
Regeneration -- Properties of EM Salt
Reproduced below is a partial excerpt from an article written by Dr.
Higa entitled Application of Diversified EM Technology,
(Keynote
Speech), from Clinical and Basic Medical Research on EM-X
- A
Collection of Research Papers, Volume 2, pp. 3 –
10. (Proceedings of
the 1st International EM Medical Conference, Okinawa, Japan, November
2001.)
Any comments or notes in parentheses are those of the current author,
and not of Dr. Higa. The excerpt from the article follows:
Deionization
…This is because
if a substance
in ionized under the usual condition, free radicals are
induced.
In other words, if a substance remains in ionized form and comes into
contact
with oxygen, it is converted into harmful substances.
Therefore,
a substance in a persistently ionized state has a minus
aspect. The
most important thing is that they are in an easily ionized state up to
the time of absorption. This is the essence of
deionization.
EM has a very special property. When EM is used, substances in ionized
form are converted into deionized form. Then just before they
are
ready to be absorbed by plants or animals, they instantly change back
into
the ionized form.
…
Deionization prevents the
excessive accumulation (of free radicals.) Therefore when we
talk
about deionization, we do not mean that all the ions are deionized, but
to change those ions that are in a state of inducing free radicals into
a normal state, and to prevent the ions from getting into a state of
excessive
reactivity.
I have mentioned
this in
my new recently published book entitled “Ocean Salt with
Amazing Regenerating
Power”. In this book, I wrote that there are two kinds of
salt. One
type is good for your body and the other type is bad for your
body.
Salt that is bad for the body has a strong ionizing power. And, because
the ions of this salt strongly induce active oxygen species and free
radicals,
consequently it becomes a salt that is bad for the body.
However
when this strongly ionizing salt is treated with EM, it is changed into
a deionized state and becomes a salt good for health. As soon
as
you start taking this salt, the body condition greatly
improves.
Food also becomes tastier with it. The salt has properties different
from
common salt. The basic property of this salt resembles the
property
of deep seawater collected from a depth greater than 200 m.
This
deep seawater possesses wonderous (sic) properties; for example, nails
do not rust when they are left in this water.
This salt has the
same properties.
In fact, this applies to all matter. For the same substance, whether it
is said to be good or bad all depends on the level of ions.
Whether
or not a substance induces active oxygen species and free radicals
determines
whether it is good or bad to the body. The characteristics
(sic)
of using EM, EM-X, or EM ceramics is that with time, the substance
turns
to a deionized state, and it stops causing the harmful effects.
Regeneration
Various regenerative
phenomena
occur when EM is used, although the mechanisms are not yet
understood….
…They
are both associated
with a special kind of wave. This phenomenon is unlikely to occur if
extra
energy is not added to the system.
In the beginning,
we tried
to explain this energy by calling it magnetic wave resonance, because
we
found that the energy resonates with magnetism. Afterward, through
research
conducted by various researchers, some scholars advised me and proposed
that the energy may be gravity wave.
Conducting research
to prove
the existence of gravity wave resonance has been a difficult
task.
Even so, Dr. Seki (also spelled Seike or Sieki) who is engaged in the
research
of gravity wave resonance has demonstrated that a considerable number
of
microorganisms generate gravity wave (sic). These microorganisms are
useful
bacteria that are commonly used in food processing, including lactic
acid
bacteria and yeasts. Almost all of these useful bacteria have the
capability
to produce antioxidant substances. It has been published that
these
bacteria generate gravity wave resonance. Subsequently, we also
investigated
this aspect, and found that among these bacteria, photosynthetic
bacteria
generated tremendous gravity wave.
Development of Sootheox Fermented Sea
Salt
Recently, based upon my own research and also on comments made by Dr.
Higa in some of his technical papers, including the one referenced
above,
found in a journal on the medical and health effects of EM products, I
developed a process for making an EM-treated sea salt with very similar
properties; this salt has been named Sootheox
Fermented Sea Salt.
The process involves dissolving a high-quality Atlantic (Lima brand)
unrefined
and unbleached sea salt in water and treating it with Activated
EM
with a molasses base, EM-X (the EM nutritional supplement marketed by
EMCO
which sells for $70 per 16 ounces), EM ceramics and
with a specially-processed
version of Sootheox Golden Bran Kelp fermented antioxidant nutritional
supplement brew, along with the addition of more
trace minerals.
The briny liquid is then processed to remove almost all of the water
content,
yielding a light brown or dark grayish moist sea salt. The moisture
content
of this Sootheox Fermented Sea Salt
is very similar to that
of a number of unrefined and unbleached “raw” sea
salt products on the
market, including:
- Light
Grey Celtic Sea Salt
- Unrefined
Celtic Sea Salt
- Fleur
De Sel sea salt
- Dead
Sea Raw Sea Salt
- French
Grey Sea Salt
- Raw

Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Tell Me More About the
Appearance, and How About the
Taste and Smell?
I have received several inquiries about the taste and appearance of
my EM salt. It is a light brown or dark grey on color. It is
rather
moist, as are a lot of the natural raw unrefined sea salts. It has a
great
taste, and a slight fragrance of sourness (as in EM) and also a very
dark,
dusky and smoky scent which is reminiscent of burnt molasses
– this is
the background flavor of all blackstrap molasses. The latter
smoky
smell is due to the fact that I chose to use a strong blackstrap
molasses-based
Activated EM in treating the sea salt; the black and carmelized solids
in the molasses become very concentrated when the volume of water is
reduced
almost to zero, thus producing the dusky and smoky scent. I could have
chosen, for the EM part, to get rid of this smell either by:
- using a much lighter Activated EM,
perhaps one made with honey and
rice water, or corn syrup, or at least Barbadoes or West Indies
molasses,
but I really wanted the antioxidant power present only in the AEM made
with blackstrap molasses
- using far less of the (blackstrap
molasses-based) AEM, making for a far
lighter in color and drastically reducing the dusky, dark and smoky
molasses
overtone, but I would have had to trade off too much of the
antioxidant,
regenerative and deionizing power of the salt, for my liking.
...and so, rather, I chose to stick with the high ratio of AEM made
with
dark blackstrap molasses, with the concomitant dark color and dusky
flavor.
Do the Properties of this Salt
Persist Even with Cooking or Boiling
or Other Heating, as Dr. Higa Seems to Indicate?
Yes, the properties of the EM fermented salt do persist even with
heating
and boiling of any foods, etc. in which it is placed, and the
properties
survive even at temperatures well above cooking temperatures.
The
persistence of the beneficial effects is much as found with the EM
Ceramics,
which are often fired (aka “calcined”), after being
treated with EM and
EM-X, to temperatures of 1,200 C or above.
Using Sootheox Fermented Sea
Salt
Sootheox Fermented Sea Salt
may be used much as you would
use any ordinary sea salt. It may be used for cooking, for sprinkling
on
raw foods and in raw and heated dressings, condiments, etc. It may also
be used in other ways for skin care and personal care as well, and for
some ideas, you may wish to look at the webpage for
EMCO’s EM
Rejuvenating Salt, and also at the first two pages
of an article
by Dr. Higa which mentioned some properties of EM-treated sea salt.
